Today, there are more digital mobile phones in the world than there are PCs and televisions combined.1 That's a staggering thought - and more and more people are using those phones to go online.

Here in the USA, we live in an extremely mobile society - people seem to always be on the go. Those people are hungry for information in an increasingly connected, but also increasingly confusing world. If your site isn't ready for the mobile web experience, then you're not the one delivering the information those people want. Guess who is - your competitors.

A few years ago, several of the biggest names in the online world, including Google, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, T-Mobile and Vodafone formed the Mobile Top Level Domain company, in charge of the .mobi domain space. In addition to creating a new domain name, the group has also worked out a style guide that includes recommendations for creating the best user experience for mobile users on .mobi web sites. Following these guides will make sure that a) your visitors will actually be able to view and navigate your site on mobile devices, and b) the experience will be speedy and interoperable between devices.

Not sure if your site is ready for the mobile web? If you're not sure, the answer is probably no. Besides viewing your site on your own web-enabled mobile phone, you can also use the mtld.mobi site's mobile phone emulator to see what users would see on their phones when they visit your site. Style guides are available at dev.mobi to get up to speed on the issues of mobile site building.

Creating a .mobi site doesn't have to be a huge hassle, though. For example, this site works on mobile phones, but there is no separate site just for the mobile crowd. Special coding allows mobile phones to see the content formatted properly for their browsers. This means updates only need to occur in one place, but everyone gets to see the latest and greatest here at AVF Creations, whether they're on a traditional computer browser, or out in the world checking out the sites on their mobile phone.
